She's kneeling on a heap of white and lilac cloth, head thrown back, mouth open, like she's been caught mid gasp or mid laugh. Behind her I let a flock of pale birds break loose out of the black, quick wet strokes, almost like a flash going off. The whole painting turns on that one twisted glance back over the shoulder.
